Goals for the New Year - Success is Possible - Follow these 12 steps!

Do you ring in the new year with resolutions for the year ahead?  Do you find yourself setting goals that for the first few weeks you energetically accomplish only to find yourself fizzling out by February?  Or do you resolve not to set goals at all, preferring to take it one day at a time?  There really isn’t a perfect way to go about tackling new goals and each way depends on the best way you, individually, feel most productive about it.  However, what therapists can help you discover is a consistent way to create and maintain your goals so you can get yourself to the finish line.

 

Accomplishing new goals varies on the individual, the type of goals you want to accomplish, and your particular situation.  Sure, if your goal is to win the lottery, it may not be super realistic, considering the odds of hitting the jackpot is 1 in 300 million. But if your aspirations are a tad more reasonable, chances are, with a little direction and some of the helpful tips below, you can be on the path to success in no time.

 

1.      Set Clear and Specific Goals:  Keep them simple and clearly define what it is that you want to accomplish.  Specific and measurable goals are much easier to attain when you have a clear direction.

2.     Break Down Big Goals into Smaller Tasks: Divide larger goals into smaller, more manageable tasks.  This makes the overall objective much less overwhelming and significantly more achievable. 

3.     Create a Plan: Outline a plan with detailed steps that you can take to help you reach your goal.  This plan will help provide you with structure and guidance on your path forward.

4.     Prioritize Your Tasks:  Identify the most important tasks that can help you focus on the attainable.

5.     Stay Organized: Keep track of your tasks, deadlines, and progress.  Organization will help you stay on top of things, reduce stress, and help keep you focused.

6.     Stay Motivated:  Find and do things that keep you motivated—keep a visualization board to see your progress, seek support from a friend or family, and remind yourself of the benefits of achieving your goal.

7.     Be Flexible:  Adaptability and adjusting along the way will help you overcome any unexpected challenges.  Flexibility will allow you to adjust or modify your plan as you go.

8.     Celebrate Small Wins:  Acknowledge and celebrate the smaller achievements.  This will boost your morale and keep you motivated along the way.

9.     Time Management:  Manage your time effectively by allocating specific time slots for different tasks.  Write it down to keep you on track and to avoid procrastination.  

10.  Keep Learning:  Stay open-minded and learn new skills while you work on your goal.  This will help you gain knowledge and enhance your capabilities.

11.  Seek Feedback:  Regularly seek feedback from a trusted friend or family member to gain insight into your progress.  Constructive feedback can help you improve and refine your approach.

12.  Stay Persistent:  Challenges and setbacks are part of the process.  Don’t let them discourage you.  Stay persistent, learn from your mistakes, and keep moving forward.  Remember—one day at a time.
